Aperture team gets new blood

that a number of engineers on Apple’s Aperture team have left or been transferred to other projects href="http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/28/is-apertures-future-in-question/">raised questions about the future of the
app.

Aperture lovers, take heart. Ex-PeopleSoft developer Blake
Seely
happily posted today that he is joining the Aperture team as of Monday, stating that he hoped this news would
dispel the recent rumors about Aperture. Apparently the Aperture project is getting an injection of new blood. Best of
luck to Blake and to the team.

Single of the week turns 2

April 29, 2006 on 2:00 pm | In ItunesMusicStore, SingleOfTheWeek, itunes music store, single of the week | Comments Off

/>It seems that it is the week of birthdays for Apple products. First the iTunes Music store celebrates its href="http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/28/happy-birthday-itms/">3rd birthday, then Tiger href="http://www.tuaw.com/2006/04/29/happy-birthday-tiger/">turns one, and now the iTunes Single of the Week is 2.
How times flies.

Apple has set up a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewCustomPage?name=pageSOTW_2">special section of the
iTunes Music Store to celebrate. It lists some handpicked singles that were previously featured, though now you’ll have
to shell out some dough to enjoy them.

Designer “Skulls” iPod holder from Muff

src="http://www.tuaw.com/media/2006/04/muffskull.jpg" alt="" />I don’t usually post about iPod holders (unless they are
DIY, interactive, or just plain silly), but the new designer series
from Muff
caught my eye. Muff showed up on TUAW
back in October
, but lacked this designer series. Despite their lack of a window or access to controls, I find them
stylish and graphically pleasing. I have a weakness for skulls like the design shown here by Aussie designer Drunk Park,
aka Seb Godfrey.

Gmail-Growl Utility 1.7

April 29, 2006 on 12:00 pm | In Gmail, alarm, alert, email, growl, message, notification, notify, utility | Comments Off

/>The Gmail-Growl Utility that adds some seriously handy features to Google’s official href="http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/index.html">Gmail Notifier has been updated with a functionality
face-lift and some fixes. It now has an option to toggle on/off Growl notifications for those times when you just need
silence, and in Mac OS X Tiger you can now drag and drop notification field elements such as sender, subject and date,
to build the actual notification you want to see (Panther users can still copy/paste text blocks to customize this
notification).

Gmail-Growl Utility has also gone fully universal as long as you’re using Google’s latest
Notifier version (1.8.2). It is also donationware (bonus points: the dev donates 10% to charity) and available from href="http://wafflesoftware.net/gmailgrowl/">Waffle Software.

Create events and todos from Mail.app messages with Event Maker

Event
Maker allows you to create iCal events and todos from Mail.app messages, or simply from scratch. It looks like it has a
more navigable UI, especially for keyboard junkies like myself, and a side drawer allows for adding alarms.
/>Event Maker is available right now from Mac
Update, where the author has posted a request for server space to enable an automatic update feature. Also, the
app’s author, Mike Abdullah, has requested help with drawing some toolbar icons, so head over to href="http://www.hawkwings.net/2006/04/29/event-maker-updated-alarms-improved-interface/">Hawk Wings for the
details and contact info if you can lend an illustrative hand.

Jobs to spend more time at Apple

/>Steve Jobs told shareholders this week that, in light of Disney’s acquisition of Pixar, he would actually be spending
more time at Apple, in part because he’ll be relinquishing his CEO position at Pixar in a couple of weeks once the
merger finishes. Many have been speculating that Mr. Jobs would be spending more time at Disney, but he publicly
responded “that couldn’t be further from the truth… It’ll require less of my time than Pixar did.”
/>This should be good news for anyone concerned about Mr. Jobs’ continued involvement with Apple.

Happy Birthday iTMS

src="http://www.tuaw.com/media/2006/04/3candles.jpg" />Join us in celebrating the third birthday of the iTunes Music
Store. That’s right — iTMS was launched three years ago today, April 28, 2003. iTMS may still be a toddler, but its
growth has been phenomenal. It’s gone in record time from a glint in Steve’s eye to the top of the heap among online
music stores.

Happy Birthday iTMS from TUAW! May there be many more.

iPod nano lawsuits moved close to Apple’s home

src="http://photoshop.weblogsinc.com/media/2006/04/justice.jpg" />One of the few things I remember from law school is a
quote from a Charles Dickens story: “The law is an ass.” Well here’s a case in which someone in the legal
system is thinking with his head, rather than the other end.

Remember the href="http://www.tuaw.com/2005/10/21/ipod-owners-actually-sue-apple/">brouhaha about how easily iPod nanos scratch?
There are still a bunch of lawsuits pending against Apple in which disgruntled iPod nano owners complained that the
scratchability (is that a word?) of their nanos constitutes a product defect. Those suits were brought in different
courts from California to New Jersey to New York to Louisiana. Fortunately for Apple, six of the cases have have been
consolidated and
transferred
to the Northern District of California court in San Jose, California so they can be heard all at once
and close to home.
